How To Teach Your Child To Be Safe In A Busy World by Art Gib
We live in a very busy world. Because it is so busy, it can also often be dangerous--especially to those unaware of all the potential dangers, such as our young children. While we are so focused on making sure they learn colors, days of the week, and all the other little things, we sometimes overlook what we should teach them about avoiding hazards in the world around us.
Start in the house. Baby-proofing is vital when you have an infant, but you eventually need to get your home back to normal. Point out potential dangers in your home and how to avoid them.
Teach your little one to NEVER reach for pots and pans on the stove, to pick up toys, to only use sharp objects like scissors under supervision, and to avoid electrical sockets.
It is never too early to talk about what to do in the event of a natural disaster or fire. Have a family plan for escape. Even very young children can be taught how to avoid smoke and stop, drop, and roll.
Next, it is absolutely necessary to teach your child about the dangers of streets and cars. Even on suburban residential streets and in cul-de-sacs, there are too many incidences of young children going unseen by passing cars as the kids dart into the roadway, chasing after a toy or a pet.
If you want to reduce the possibility of this happening to your son or daughter, then take the time to teach them about the potential danger cars and roads can provide. Let them know that they always need to stop, look, and listen near a roadway.
This can be fun for them--it doesn't have to be all scary warnings. An age-appropriate, entertaining truck video can show them what kind of vehicles populate the transportation system--fire trucks, police cars, semi-trucks and more--along with teaching them the signs of when such a vehicle is approaching.
Teaching them about safety inside the car is important, too. Let them know that when Mommy or Daddy is driving, they need to pay close attention to what's going on around them, so screaming or yelling can create a dangerous situation.
Many young children are averse to their car seat or booster seat, so help them learn why it is important. Let's face it--seatbelts aren't always the most comfortable, so we all need reminders about why they're important. And don't forget to set a good example by wearing yours!
All children should be taught from an early age about how to avoid stranger danger. Give them a secret key word that all legitimate family members and friends should know in the event of an emergency. Teach them not to go with anyone that doesn't have that key word.
